Frankie Stevens has a glittering world class singing and acting career and is one of Aotearoa’s most renowned performers - as a singer, Master of Ceremonies and speaker.
His professional career began at 16 years old when he moved to join a group in Sydney, Australia. Later as a solo artist in NZ he recorded a number of successful songs including No.1 hit My Elusive Dreams.
In 1970 Frankie moved to London and won Opportunity Knocks six times in a row. He sang at both The Palladium and Albert Hall and is the only New Zealander to do a 5 week season at the world famous “Talk of the Town”. He also represented Great Britain in several song contests, winning the Silver Prize in the Second Tokyo Music Festival, the Bronze Medal in Caracas Venezuela, and the Gold Medal at the Golden Orpheus Song Festival in Bulgaria. He progressed to the world famous Sand’s Hotel in Las Vegas, the MGM Grand Hotel (the largest hotel in the world at the time) and worked with greats such as Olivia Newton John, Shirley Bassey, Sammy Davis Jnr and Milton Berle. He signed with CBS records in London and toured Japan as the opening act for the wonderful Shirley Bassey.
The next five years were spent in Honolulu, Hawaii appearing in his own show at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. During his time in Hawaii he acted on the original Hawaii Five 0 and played a Russian spy on the CBS Movie of the week, M Station Hawaii.
On his return to NZ in 1982 he operated one of NZ's major Nightclub Restaurants and utilised his talents singing, performing in his own TV series and took further trips to Japan, Australia & the USA, while helping to raise two young children.
In 1994, Frankie was invited to appear in Harry M. Miller’s New Zealand's touring theatre production of Jesus Christ Superstar where he played the High Priest “Caiaphas” he was then invited to reprise the role in the ‘94-95’ tour of Australia.
He appeared as an actor in Matrix 2 which was filmed at Fox Studios in Australia and in NZ appeared in various TV and live performances including a tour with Sir Howard Morrison. He’s been a popular judge for the highly successful “NZ Idol” TV series, MC for NZ Netball televised finals and a regular at the Xmas in the Park events.
In 2005 Frankie was honoured by Her Majesty the Queen in the New Year's Honours List becoming a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
