Dr Mary P. Quin's career as a management executive has ranged from high tech start-ups in Silicon Valley to leading an outsourced services company in Alaska and CEO of a government agency in New Zealand.
Mary is now pursuing a corporate governance career and is a director on the board of Westpac NZ Ltd.
Background and education
Born in Palmerston North, Mary obtained her BSc(Hons) in Physics at the University of Canterbury before moving to the USA for a PhD in Materials Engineering.
Mary's early career was in industrial R&D and product development roles. After obtaining her MBA at Harvard Business School Mary transitioned into management at Fortune 500 companies in the USA.
Mary returned to New Zealand in 2013 as the inaugural CEO of Callaghan Innovation, a government organisation established to drive technology-based business growth.
Like many New Zealanders Mary enjoys exploring new destinations. In Yemen in 1998 she was among a tour group taken hostage in Yemen. Her research and book about the kidnapping contributed to the deportation and conviction of a UK-based terrorist in a New York court in 2014.
Mary was recognised by the NZ Herald as one of two 2014 New Zealanders of the Year for her testimony at the trial.
