Everyone working in this industry knows events deliver real value. The challenge is proving it - especially when the most meaningful outcomes don't fit neatly into a spreadsheet.
Trust built in a conversation that wouldn't have happened any other way. A relationship formed at a conference that leads somewhere years later. A sense of belonging that keeps someone coming back, and stops them leaving the organisation. These things are significant, and they're also almost impossible to capture in a post-event survey.
There is a growing expectation that events need to be able to articulate their value more explicitly. Measurable ROI was the number one factor event professionals expect to matter by 2030, with 72% rating it essential or very important. That's the strongest consensus on any single question in the entire survey.
And the people scrutinising that spend aren't going away. Finance teams, senior leadership, sponsors comparing event spend against digital advertising where every dollar is trackable - they're all asking harder questions about what they're actually getting.
The research isn't suggesting the answer is reducing events to numbers. It's about better stories. Moving from 'it went well' to 'here's what changed.' From 'the networking was great' to 'three people in that room are now working on something together.' From describing what happened to connecting it to what happened next.
Three questions came up in the research that I think are worth asking after every event: What changed because this happened? What new relationships were formed? And what would actually be missed if it didn't run again?
From a speaker angle, this matters too. The speakers who are easiest to justify in a cost-scrutinised environment are the ones whose impact is visible - not just felt in the room. Being able to articulate the take-home value for your audience before, during and after a speaker engagement is something we work really hard on with our clients and speakers. It makes the whole investment easier to defend, BUT WHY I TRULY LOVE WHAT I DO - it’s the impact of the speaker that goes far beyond the event that no spreadsheet can show but the proof is in what changed – the better work culture, the person who made a change that improved their health, the person who recognised they were burnt out, the team that broke down barriers and became stronger, the leader that was vulnerable, the child who asked for help after struggling for years, the inside secrets and knowledge share, the understanding that anything is possible, the feeling of not being alone - others are going through it too and so much more!
