Guyon Espiner is one of New Zealand’s most respected and versatile journalists, with a career spanning three decades across print, television and radio.
He began his journalism journey in print before moving into broadcast media, where he spent 14 years reporting from the Parliamentary press gallery, including time as Political Editor for Television New Zealand. Known for his sharp political insight and calm authority, he became a trusted face and voice in current affairs.
After relocating to Auckland in 2012, Guyon joined TV3, contributing to investigative programme 60 Minutes and co-hosting current affairs series Third Degree and The Vote. In 2014, he made the switch to radio, co-hosting Morning Report on RNZ National for five years. His interviews, particularly in political coverage, became a hallmark of the programme’s trusted journalism.
Guyon has led several acclaimed documentary and podcast projects including The Ninth Floor, The Service, and Red Line. His television documentaries Proof and Wasted, which explored alcohol and drug policy in Aotearoa, aired on TVNZ and drew wide public engagement. In 2021, he released his book The Drinking Game, a deeply personal and investigative look into New Zealand’s drinking culture.
Currently, he works as an investigative journalist with RNZ’s In Depth team and hosts the multimedia series 30 with Guyon Espiner, continuing his commitment to compelling, public interest journalism.
He lives in Mt Eden with his wife Emma and daughter Nico, and is a dedicated runner who has completed 18 marathons.
