A respected broadcaster with more than two decades of experience, Melissa Stokes is the anchor of 1News at Six, New Zealand’s flagship weekday evening news bulletin. Her career at TVNZ has spanned a wide range of reporting and presenting roles across programmes including Breakfast, Sunday, and Seven Sharp.
Melissa is an award-winning journalist who joined TVNZ in 2001. She has covered major national and international events such as the Christchurch Earthquake, the Beijing Olympics, and the Delhi Commonwealth Games. Her global reporting experience includes two years as the 1News Europe Correspondent, based in London, where she covered the conflict in Israel, travelled from Syria to Lebanon to report on both sides of the unrest, and stood outside Number 10 Downing Street as Tony Blair stepped down. She’s also covered the Rugby World Cup in France, the America’s Cup in Valencia, and interviewed high-profile personalities including Jennifer Hudson and the cast of High School Musical.
Melissa’s storytelling is marked by courage, curiosity, and a strong connection with her audience. From rat hunting in the Scottish Hebrides to live reporting from conflict zones, she brings authenticity and energy to every assignment.
Outside the newsroom, Melissa regularly hosts large-scale events such as business awards and charity fundraisers, drawing on her journalism and live broadcasting skills to deliver engaging and polished performances.
She is also a proud mum of two boys, often found in activewear chasing after them — balancing family life with her high-profile media career.
