Leigh Hart is one of New Zealand's most recognisable comedians, producers and entrepreneurs, renowned for his uniquely deadpan humour and ability to turn absurd ideas into enduring cultural brands.
Born into a coal mining family on the West Coast, Leigh spent much of his childhood overseas as his father worked as a tunneller in countries including Indonesia, Hong Kong and Peru. He spent five years living in a remote valley high in the Andes before returning to New Zealand to attend Christ's College in Christchurch.
After school, Leigh briefly followed in his father's footsteps, working as a tunneller on the Channel Tunnel between the United Kingdom and France. However, music soon became his focus and he formed a rock band with his brother, touring throughout the UK and Europe before an eventful stint that included 11 days in jail and deportation from France over visa technicalities.
Relocating to Auckland, Leigh found his true calling in television. He first rose to prominence on SportsCafe as the iconic character "That Guy" before creating and starring in cult New Zealand favourites including Moon TV, Leigh Hart's Mysterious Planet and The Late Night Big Breakfast. His distinctive style of humour and unconventional approach to storytelling quickly made him one of the country's most recognisable entertainment personalities.
Alongside his television success, Leigh established a successful career across radio, production and business. He became a familiar voice to audiences through Radio Hauraki, contributed to the Alternative Commentary Collective, and has continued to evolve his media presence through podcasting and digital content. As a producer, director and business owner, he has built a reputation for backing his creative instincts and maintaining ownership of his work.
Today, Leigh hosts the podcast Paid To Talk and continues to produce content through his independent production company. He has also achieved remarkable success as an entrepreneur, turning the fictional Wakachangi Beer brand into a nationwide business and expanding it with the launch of Snackachangi chips. Combined with his long-running partnership with Hellers, these ventures have cemented his reputation as one of New Zealand's most innovative and commercially successful media personalities.
