Both seasoned professionals, Rebecca Wright and Michael Murphy first discovered their undeniable chemistry while performing together in Rent at Auckland’s beloved Civic Theatre. Their voices - distinct yet harmoniously blended, created something truly special. Recognising their musical synergy, they formed Becks and Michael, and since then, have been thrilling audiences with their unique sound and high-energy performances.
Rebecca Wright
Rebecca has built an illustrious career in musical theatre, starring in some of New Zealand’s most prestigious productions. She recently portrayed Fantine in Auckland’s sold-out season of Les Misérables at the Civic Theatre and Svetlana in Chess alongside the Auckland Philharmonia. Other standout roles include Eva Peron in Evita, Oz in We Will Rock You, Cinderella, and Mimi in Rent. She also led the Starlight Express NZ Arena Tour as Pearl.
Beyond theatre, Rebecca is a powerhouse vocalist in the corporate entertainment scene, headlining major events across the country. She has starred in Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park and Symphony Under The Stars, was a finalist in NZ Idol (2006), and even held a Guinness World Record for singing upside down!
Michael Murphy
Michael first stole the hearts of New Zealanders as the runner-up on the inaugural season of NZ Idol (2004). His debut single shot to #1, with his album No Place to Land achieving gold status. He later fronted rock band 5Star Fallout, touring New Zealand, the USA, and the UK.
As a musical theatre performer, Michael has built an impressive résumé, earning acclaim for his dynamic stage presence and vocal ability. He starred as Roger in Rent at Auckland’s Civic Theatre, Kenickie in Grease at Christchurch’s Court Theatre, and most tackled the bucket list role of Frederick Trumper in Chess alongside the Auckland Philharmonia. His versatility and commanding performances have made him a standout in the industry.
Michael is also the lead singer of Written By Wolves, one of New Zealand’s most streamed rock bands, with over 100 million Spotify streams and a strong international following. The band has toured extensively across Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand and continues to push boundaries in the global rock scene.
In addition to his musical career, Michael is a sought-after Master of Ceremonies, hosting major events for brands such as SkyCity, Trustpower, and the World Choir Games. His sharp wit, infectious energy, and natural stage presence make him a favourite for corporate functions and high-profile events.
In 2024, both Rebecca and Michael were honoured to perform as soloists at the World Choir Games Closing Ceremony, singing alongside an 800-strong choir and the Auckland Philharmonia. Their performances showcased their exceptional vocal ability on an international stage.
They also debuted their modern cabaret show, The Royale Experience, developed in collaboration with Diamond Entertainment. This high-energy production enjoyed a two-month residency at SkyCity at the end of 2024, redefining the corporate entertainment scene with its unique blend of glamour, storytelling, and musical excellence.
Additionally, both Rebecca and Michael front Halo - New Zealand’s number one corporate covers band - further solidifying their reputation as premier entertainers in the industry.

Becks and Michael - and the rest of A Beautiful Mess - provided the entertainment at my niece's wedding at Okahu Reception Centre. I simply can't overstate the awesome job they did. They were professional and pleasant and fun and flexible. And their music was utterly outstanding, from a couple of 30 minute jazz sets, to keeping the dance floor packed and pumping for almost 4 hours. I can't thank you enough. I am in awe of your talent and wish you every success.
