A familiar face in New Zealand homes for more than two decades, Simon Dallow is a highly respected New Zealand television journalist, news anchor and media personality, best known as the former weeknight host of TVNZ’s flagship 1News at 6pm.
After completing his legal studies, Simon began his career as a litigation and insurance lawyer in Auckland. He was en route to London on his OE when the 1987 stock market crash hit, forcing a rethink about his future. An immediate career in bankruptcy law held little appeal, and that turning point led him away from the courtroom and towards the wider world.
Tourism beckoned, and Simon spent the next six years as a freelance tour director across Europe. Guiding thousands of travellers through some of the world’s great cities, he honed his storytelling skills, his curiosity about people and places, and his passion for history, culture and current affairs.
In 1993, Simon returned to New Zealand and joined TVNZ, marking the beginning of a long and influential career in broadcasting. He first presented TV2’s late‑night current affairs show Newsnight, alongside Alison Mau and Marcus Lush, before going on to front a wide range of news and current affairs programmes. Over the years he has presented One Mid Evening News, One Tonight, Agenda and Q+A, and has anchored programmes right across TVNZ’s news and current affairs stable.
In 2006, Simon teamed up with Wendy Petrie as the weeknight co‑presenter of 1News at Six, a partnership that became a staple of New Zealand television. In 2020 he became the sole 6pm news anchor, reinforcing his status as one of the country’s most trusted news presenters and a leading voice in New Zealand current affairs broadcasting.
Away from the studio, Simon is a proud father of two who describes himself as an average Kiwi bloke with an enduring love of sport and a deep interest in local and global issues.
